My Goal in Blogging

I started this blog in May of 2008, shortly after my election to the School Committee, because I believed it was very important to both provide the community with an opportunity to share their thoughts with me about our schools and to provide me with an opportunity for me to ask questions and share my thoughts and reasoning. I have found the conversation generated on my blog to be extremely helpful to me in learning community views on many issues. I appreciate the many people who have taken the time to share their views. I believe it is critical to the quality of our public schools to have a public discussion of our community priorities, concerns and aspirations.

Two Bulletin Pieces: My SC Service, Elementary Math

The Bulletin approached me shortly after I decided not to run to ask if I'd be willing to do an interview about my experience on the SC, and that piece is published in today's paper (http://amherstbulletin.com/story/id/202275/).

There is also a story on Tuesday's public hearing regarding math in the Amherst elementary schools (http://amherstbulletin.com/story/id/202246/)

Write-in a vote for Catherine Sanderson today to show support for continued improvements in our schools!

As though Catherine Sanderson is the only one in town who supports continued improvements in our schools.

Maybe the only one who delivers and actually pushes to get improvements done, instead of just talking about it.

Is it not ironic that Maria Geryk sent out a special email to parents about the movie "The Race to Nowhere: the Dark Side of America's Achievement Culture"-- in English and Spanish no less -- and touting a price reduction from the $12 ticket for low-income families?

1) a $12 film being screened in the high school auditorium? Why the steep price? What parents will come....the affluent ones by chance?
2) Many Latino and low-income children are the among the lowest academic achievers in our district and the subject of much fruitless handwringing in our district -- and this movie is for.... these families?
3) The film isn't in Spanish, just the announcement about it. So if you are only Spanish-speaking you will...go?
4) Many parents, low-income, Latino, well-off, well-educated, non-English-speaking, etc. actually want their children to achieve academically and they see education as a key to their children's future.
5) Do our schools really resemble the schools depicted in this film?
6) If parents are so worried that their children are stressing out about college, they should make sure their kids apply only to colleges they can easily get into and the many community colleges and state schools? Or go to an alternative school. Problem solved.
7) What educational initiatives to close the achievement gap and improve learning has the Superintendent ever emailed parents about? Is overachievement and stress the most important educational issue facing our schoolchildren?

Wondering - I will say it really struck me that the screening of this film has received TONS of attention -- big announcement on our website, special emails and calls to families, etc. -- whereas the math action plan received virtually no notice. I am struck by the contrast.

Just wondering. Do any of your readers think the Amherst schools do anything well? Are they at all proud of having the 2010 Massachsuetts Teacher of the Year as well as 2010 Paraprofessional of the Year from Amherst? Are any of the readers proud of any of the accomplishments of our students? Do any or your readers see anythin good in our schools?

I'm waiting for the movie "We're Fine Just Where We Are: the Dark Side of Amherst's Culture of Denial and Self-Congratulation."

Where are the results of yesterday's election where we get to see how many wrote in Catherine Sanderson for SC? Will the school board take note?

What is there to take note of?

I have no idea how many write-in votes I got - but I believe Larry Kelley will be posting that info on his blog whenever it is available.
