My Goal in Blogging

I started this blog in May of 2008, shortly after my election to the School Committee, because I believed it was very important to both provide the community with an opportunity to share their thoughts with me about our schools and to provide me with an opportunity for me to ask questions and share my thoughts and reasoning. I have found the conversation generated on my blog to be extremely helpful to me in learning community views on many issues. I appreciate the many people who have taken the time to share their views. I believe it is critical to the quality of our public schools to have a public discussion of our community priorities, concerns and aspirations.

Regional School Committee Meeting, October 12, 2010

This will be a brief update to say we had a very productive meeting tonight. The meeting started with a 2 hour open meeting with the search firm assisting us with the superintendent search and they were just excellent. You can read about this aspect of the meeting in the linked Gazette article(http://www.gazettenet.com/2010/10/13/amherst-superintendent-search-begin-public). I will provide a fuller view of the superintendent search process -- which we need lots of community input about -- and will also provide a fuller update of the regional meeting tomorrow.

The process of choosing a Search Committee in Amherst has never seemed like a transparent process (IMO). Whereas, the SC - voted for in open and fair elections - are supposed to choose the supt. It troubles me that the narrowing of supt search is now being turned over to a Search Committee - what will the process be for choosing this committee and who will be doing the choosing?

I watched the October 12 meeting on ACTV, and all I got from it was Pelham, Leverett, and Shutesbury wanting to turn the reins over to Maria.

You must have watched a different meeting than the one I attended on October 12th. No one from Leverett, Shutesbury or Pelham made any statement indicating they wanted to turn the reins over to Maria Geryk. Not one comment was made in 4 hours that said anything about turning the reins over to anyone. Not one. Not even close. Lets try and get our facts straight. The amount of misinformation passing for fact on this blog is stunning.

I actually thought both meetings were very good....alot of very good discussion and alot accomplished. I think Rick Hood is doing a good job chairing and tries hard to keep the discussion moving. And to end on time!!
